My Daughter Gave Me a Manicure - And I Liked It! (Caught on Video)

If you are lucky enough to have a daughter, you know that there is nothing like being "Daddy" to a little girl. But this is an enormous responsibility. It's a your job to teach her how she deserves to be treated, and its also your job to show her that even the most macho or seemingly macho or burly of men can explore their feminine side for the right person. Am I macho? Not really. But I still wasn't keen on having my nails painted, especially by someone who still can't color between the lines. But I'd do almost anything to see a smile on my little girl's face. And in the grand scheme of things, a few minutes (or days) of having my nails painted, ummm...lavender, was worth it knowing the memory would last my 3-year-old daughter a lifetime.

Laugh all you want. But while you're laughing, ask yourself why you won't let your little girl paint your nails. From where I stand, there is nothing more manly than being a great dad to your kids. And all those guys who you think are going to laugh at you, well, there's a reason why they wear socks and sandals in the summertime. Think about it...

Here's my very first manicure. I'm sure it will not be the last...

Fatherhood Front Lines - When A Dad Won't Step Up, Who Will?

Photo courtesy of www.thegridto.comFor a guy who often writes about the many virtues of involved dads, I sure didn’t have the best of role models for dads when I was growing up. There was my own father, who I didn’t live with, who I only saw on Sundays, who mostly took us out to do the things that he enjoyed (house shopping, eating at cheap  hotel buffets, taking us to our grandparents so my grandmother would take care of us).  And there was my stepfather, who I did live with, who I only saw every night at dinner and on Saturdays, who also mostly took us out to do the things that he enjoyed (sailing, eating at expensive restaurants, taking us to my grandparents so he could spend more time with my mother alone).  So where does that leave a kid; one starved for male guidance and one whose own dad couldn’t be bothered to wake up early on a weekend to watch his son play hockey, and one whose step father kept a separate room in the house so no one would disturb him while he watched tapes of his favorite Miami Vice episodes?
